Season 4, Episode 1 · Episode 56 of 79

Blackjack

First aired Friday, January 23, 1987

Synopsis

Hawke learns his brother St. John is alive; tragedy strikes the team and St. John returns to help reclaim Airwolf.

Episode recap

Everything changes in one hour. "Blackjack" answers the question the series asked in its very first scene — St. John Hawke is alive — and makes the audience pay for the answer with the show's deepest loss, as tragedy tears the original team apart. String, gravely wounded, passes the torch he carried for three seasons; his brother returns from the void to take up the fight and reclaim Airwolf. It is the most consequential episode of the entire saga: a finale and a pilot fused together, closing the classic era and opening the final chapter in the same breath. The search that defined the series is over. What it cost is the season's engine.
