Naturally, the shoot is a front — a criminal mastermind is using the film as cover for a gold heist, with the stunt pilots as unwitting set dressing. The premise lets the series celebrate its own craft: the stunt flying on screen is played by the real aerial talent that made Airwolf's action possible every week. Watching Hawke fly 'fake' stunts inside a real heist gives the hour a wink the show didn't often allow itself.
