Season 3, Episode 4 · Episode 37 of 79

Fortune Teller

First aired Saturday, October 19, 1985

Synopsis

Archangel is kidnapped and tortured; Hawke races to free him before an assassin squad is activated.

Episode recap

The man in white is taken again — but where "Fallen Angel" was a rescue, "Fortune Teller" is a race against what captivity extracts. Archangel is being tortured for what he knows, and what he knows includes an assassin squad waiting for activation. Hawke has to reach him before interrogation becomes catastrophe, in an episode that asks the spymaster's coldest question about himself: how long can any man hold out? The title's promise of foretold futures plays out in tradecraft — predicting moves, reading tells, betting lives on the difference. One of Season 3's most tightly wound espionage hours.
