And a Child Shall Lead

First aired Saturday, October 12, 1985

Synopsis

Hawke relies on an autistic boy's astonishing memory to locate the boy's kidnapped aircraft-designer father.

Episode recap

An aircraft designer is kidnapped for what he carries in his head — and the only witness who can lead Hawke to him is the man's autistic son, a boy whose extraordinary memory records everything and surrenders it on no one's schedule but his own. "And a Child Shall Lead" is one of the series' most humane hours, trading firepower for patience as Hawke learns to communicate on the boy's terms. The episode treats the child's mind not as a plot device but as the mission's actual terrain. For a show about the fastest machine in the sky, its best scenes here happen at the speed of trust.
