Season 4, Episode 7 · Episode 62 of 79

Deathtrain

First aired Friday, March 6, 1987

Synopsis

Tasked with guarding a nerve-gas train, the crew is fooled by mercenaries who divert the real train with a decoy.

Episode recap

Guarding a nerve-gas train sounds straightforward until the mercenaries reveal their trick: a decoy, and the real train quietly diverted while everyone protects the wrong cargo. "Deathtrain" is a shell game played with chemical weapons, and the team has to find the true consignment before it reaches whoever paid for the misdirection. Trains gave 1980s action television its favorite unstoppable-object grammar, and Airwolf pairs it with the era's most feared cargo. The Lady against a moving train is the poster; the episode's brains are in untangling which train, which route, and who wrote the timetable.
