Protecting an African president during a coup would be a straight bodyguard job — except the commander leading the coup has a connection to the unit of Hawke's missing brother. Suddenly a foreign-policy mission is personal archaeology. "And They Are Us" widens the St. John thread from a memory into an active lead, and the title's ambiguity does real work: the men on the other side of this war are mirrors, soldiers shaped by the same battles. It's the season's most direct statement that the search for St. John will never be a side quest — every mission is secretly measured against the chance it might lead to him.
