The Deadly Circle

First aired Saturday, November 30, 1985

Synopsis

Hawke learns his Vietnamese friends' families were taken by survivors of a village he once destroyed by accident.

Episode recap

The war comes for Hawke's conscience in "The Deadly Circle". Families of his Vietnamese friends are taken — by survivors of a village that Hawke himself once destroyed by accident, in the fog of a war that never issued clean hands. The series had always treated Vietnam as Hawke's wound; this episode makes it his debt. There is no villain here in the comfortable sense, only consequences with long memories, and a title that says precisely what it means. What Hawke owes, and to whom, and whether rescue can ever be repayment — the episode leaves the arithmetic to him, and to the audience.
