Ground Zero

First aired Friday, May 1, 1987

Synopsis

Jo is kidnapped by a Japanese businessman seeking revenge for his father's wartime death.

Episode recap

A Japanese businessman kidnaps Jo — not for ransom, but for history: revenge for his father's death in the war. "Ground Zero" reaches back four decades to power a modern vendetta, and the title leaves no doubt which war and which wound. The episode gives Season 4 its meditation on inherited grievance: a son avenging a father against people who inherited nothing but the consequences. The crew has to bring Jo home from inside a grief that predates them all. The series often asked what wars leave behind; this one answers — sons doing arithmetic with other people's lives.
