Midway through Season 3, Archangel arrives with the most disorienting news of the series: St. John Hawke has a son. Le Van — a Vietnamese-American boy living with adoptive guardians in California — turns the show's oldest abstraction into flesh and blood. The search for St. John had been about the past; suddenly it has a future.

Le Van gives the back half of the series its warmest thread. The classic era's final episode, 'Birds of Paradise', is built around protecting his family — and when St. John finally comes home in Season 4, the reunion the series spent four years earning includes a son as well as a brother.
